The Leather Jacket I Now Love

Like many people I know, I had a semi-serious aversion to leather jackets. I’m not sure why I really grew up not loving the look of a leather jacket or the look of anyone wearing a leather jacket. However, that all changed recently when I decided to buy a motorcycle.

As much as he had always hated the look of a leather jacket, he had always wanted to buy a motorcycle. It seems like a contradiction, and I guess it was. However, the opportunity to buy a recently used motorcycle fell on my lap and I accepted the offer. He knew that owning a motorcycle would change a lot more than the way he started working. It only took me a few days to get a motorcycle and some conversations with friends to realize that I really needed a leather jacket for my new ride.

I needed a new leather jacket, they said, not only because every biker should have one, but also because a leather jacket is the safest thing to wear in an accident. I started thinking about having an accident on my motorcycle and that was the only compelling way I needed to go out and start buying a leather jacket for myself. I brought a couple of more experienced friends who gave me their opinions on where to find the right leather jacket and how to decide which style suits me best.

I felt a little weird buying a leather jacket. I felt like one of the biker kids I used to make fun of in high school was about to walk into the shop and make fun of me for becoming one of them. I tried to put these thoughts behind me and complete the task at hand: finding the perfect leather jacket. I must have tried on twenty or so leather jackets and carefully discussed the details of each. Making purchasing decisions has never been easy for me and buying a leather jacket was no exception.

Once I found the perfect leather jacket for my new style and my motorcycling needs, I got the opinion of a couple of friends to confirm me and then I bought the leather jacket. I’ve had my leather jacket for a few months. I used it most days, whether I needed it for a motorcycle ride or not. I never thought I’d become someone who truly loves a leather jacket, but I’m afraid I’ve hopelessly fallen into that category of people, and I love it.
